In October 2024, the Urban Living Lab Circular Building Vienna focused on the topic of building, rebuilding and dismantling buildings with the following questions: “What constitutes circular building, rebuilding and dismantling? Which circular principles are already being implemented today and how are they being applied? Where are changes necessary in order to reach the goal?
MIA was responsible for the methodological development, implementation and moderation of the workshop.
To begin with, Klaus Kodydek from the City of Vienna’s Building Directorate gave an insight into the content of the Circularity Factor 1.0 (ZiFa 1.0). The ZiFa 1.0 contains and defines measures in 8 categories and 30 criteria that support circular planning and construction along the life cycle.

The subsequent interactive part of the workshop focused on categories from ZiFa 1.0 such as the use of materials, flexibility, convertibility and redensification, durability, exchangeability and reparability as well as deconstruction and reuse. Experts from planning and construction practice, administration and research discussed how the requirements for circular building, rebuilding and dismantling can be implemented in practice and what hurdles still exist on the way.
The project will continue in November 2024 with the workshop 3 and focus group work on the topic of “Circular economy in the use of buildings and their surroundings”. Another important contribution to the circular economy in the construction industry in Vienna.
