In November 2024, the Urban Living Lab Circular Construction Vienna focused on the use of buildings and their surroundings, addressing the following questions:

What role does the use of buildings and their surroundings play in the implementation of a circular economy? What changes are necessary to integrate the principles of circularity into their use?

MIA was once again responsible for the methodological development, implementation, and moderation of the workshop.

To begin with, Stefanie Roithmayr from the City of Vienna’s Building Department provided an overview of the associated areas of action: from the planning and construction of communal spaces and flexibly designed floor plans to the requirements for multiple use of rooms and the legal framework governing construction and financing.

Because aspects such as multiple uses only work if they are accepted, practiced, and considered valuable by users, Claudia Schrenk from the City of Vienna’s Building Department gave a presentation on the “systems thinking model,” according to which the most effective levers for the circular economy lie in overcoming paradigms and thought patterns.

Afterwards, experts from the fields of planning, real estate management, research, and administration actively exchanged knowledge and experiences regarding circular economy in building use.

We will continue in February 2025 with the fourth workshop and focus group work on the topic of circular economy in building renovation. We look forward to another co-creative and interesting exchange!
