Invitation to the “Mini Symposium: Transformation of the housing stock in dialog between practice and research”: Design projects and research results on the topic of “Retrofit Municipal Housing” from the “Retrofit Vienna” research initiative will be presented as part of a marketplace discussion.

Symposium Transformation of the housing stock - in dialog between practice and researchWhat is the symposium about?
Necessary measures on decarbonization, maintenance as well as to adapt to climate change raise the question of the transformation of the housing stock throughout Austria. Although there are already numerous technological solutions, less attention is often paid to their feasibility and social sustainability when it comes to preserving building structures and the social fabric of neighborhoods. This opens discussion on how so-called “retro-fitting” can be carried out in a way that is not only ecologically but also socially sustainable. How can affordability, legal framework conditions and the everyday needs of residents be reconciled with the demands of socio-ecological transformation? What historical examples of dealing with existing buildings can be used when it comes to taking residents and their needs as well as the routines of property managers into account in the processes? This symposium will focus on a broad examination of issues relating to the transformation of existing buildings at the interface of socio-ecological transformation and new non-profit and communal housing, as well as changing requirements and expectations of housing in terms of quality of life.
