Together, we are shaping the reality check for circular planning and construction in Vienna!

At the beginning of October 2024, the first practical workshop took place as part of the “Urban Living Lab Circular Economy in Construction Vienna,” where about 35 experts from research, planning, construction, and administration worked together to identify solutions. Through co-creative work in various work modules, using different taskstations and working in small groups, questions such as “How must planning processes be designed in order to implement circular construction? Which principles already work, and where is change still needed?” were brought into focus for joint processing. MIA was commissioned by the City of Vienna (Magistrate’s Office – Buildings and Technology Division) to design, develop the methodology and content, and implement the Urban Living Lab and all formats, such as the “Praxis-Check workshop” series. We would like to thank the motivated workshop participants for their positive feedback on the co-creative design and look forward to the next workshop on October 24, 2024, where we will focus on circular construction, additive manufacturing, and deconstruction.

About the project: The Urban Living Lab Circular Economy in Construction Vienna is concerned with establishing a circular economy in the construction industry, specifically with putting theory into practice. Through a series of workshops and formats that build on each other, intensive research is being conducted into how the principles of the circular economy can be applied in planning, new construction, renovation, and use. The focus is on the specific requirements of circular construction and how these can be implemented in a practical manner. Until December 2025, we will be working together in the lab to co-create, experiment, and test. The focus is on recyclable buildings and their surroundings.
